Eliminating the Marriage Penalty
Weller has fought hard to eliminate the marriage tax penalty for 25 million American working couples. He is proud to report that we are one step closer in the fight to eliminate the marriage tax penalty forever! On April 28, 2004, the House of Representatives passed H.R 4181 by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 393-95. H.R. 4181 is important legislation which would make marriage tax relief a permanent part of our tax code. This vote was very important because without H.R. 4181 marriage tax relief will expire at the end of this year. How is this possible? Here is the way it works. On May 28, 2003, President Bush signed the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief and Reconciliation Act, H.R 2 into law. This law included provisions which would eliminate the marriage penalty as of January 1, 2003. Both couples that itemize their taxes as well as those that do not itemize would benefit. Married couples could take advantage of this relief for two years, 2003 and 2004. After 2004, the marriage tax provisions included in H.R. 2 are set to expire. Congressman Weller strongly believes that marriage tax relief should NEVER expire. In fact, he wants it to be made a permanent part of our tax code. Since being elected to Congress, he has led this fight and he will see this fight through to the end. The time has come and Congressman Weller is committed to eliminating this unfair tax burden once and for all! He looks forward to the day when he can report to you that the marriage tax has been completely eliminated and it will NEVER come back!
