Sullivan Statement on Mark Foley Situation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Sullivan released the following statement regarding the Mark Foley situation:

“The news of inappropriate communication between then-Congressman Mark Foley and former House Congressional pages comes as a shock to all of us. His actions are disgusting and appalling. I condemn his actions and call for an immediate and thorough investigation to find out exactly what happened.

“I strongly encourage Speaker Hastert and other members of House Leadership, to develop and implement new guidelines to ensure the safety of all students participating in the Congressional page program. It is also important that the U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and the State of Florida investigate both the electronic communications and whether anyone, including House Leadership, had knowledge of these messages and did not report them. We must take steps to ensure that what has transpired with Mr. Foley must never happen again.

“When parents send their children to Washington to participate in the Congressional page program, they trust that they will have a valuable educational experience and be safe. Mr. Foley’s actions are a disgrace to all who work in the Capitol and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.”
