Our government makes the simple promise of a secure retirement to every American who works for many years and contributes to our retirement benefit system. Social Security is the very foundation of retirement security for millions of Americans.
I'm staunchly committed to ensuring the long-term solvency of Social Security and preserving full benefits for Americans who have spent their entire working lives contributing to this program. I believe we need to be accentuating those benefits by repealing the tax on Social Security payments enacted back in 1993. As a former professional patient advocate, I believe prescription drugs are an essential part of high-quality medical treatment, and I supported enactment of the Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act. This legislation strengthens Medicare by creating a first-ever, voluntary prescription drug benefit and by offering seniors more choices about their own health care. By offering greater benefits and more choices, this plan represents a positive step forward in providing affordable prescription drugs to all senior citizens.
