My efforts in Congress are guided by the belief that environmental preservation and restoration are a critical part of the legacy we leave to future generations. One of my first achievements in Congress was enactment of the Hudson River Habitat Restoration Act in 1996. Since that time, I have worked to promote environmentally sound policies that will build on the progress we have made in recent years.
Last year, I co-sponsored the Highlands Conservation Act and in a bipartisan effort we passed the bill through Congress. This new law will help focus federal funds toward preserving open space in our own Highlands region for the next 10 years.
We have increased conservation funding, enacted legislation that enables us to clean up and redevelop abandoned brownfields sites across the country, and implemented new clean water standards that will protect us from arsenic. I also have co-introduced the Clean Smokestacks Act, which calls for tough limits on power plant emissions, and the Climate Stewardship Act, which takes significant steps toward proactively addressing global warming.
