Pelosi Statement on San Francisco being Named the Permanent Headquarters of the Stem Cell Institute

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee's decision to make San Francisco the permanent headquarters of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, known as the Stem Cell Institute, and home to its $3 billion stem cell research initiative:

"This is a great day for San Francisco and an acknowledgement of the city’s entrepreneurial spirit, unparalleled talent pool, and ideal location. Today’s decision adds to San Francisco’s reputation as a world-class city on the leading edge of innovation.

"San Francisco is now primed to become the stem cell research capital of the world and the center of biotechnology research in the United States. The Stem Cell Institute will serve as a magnet for job growth in the Bay Area region. But it will also serve as a beacon of hope for millions of Americans who look to stem cell research as the key to possible cures for diseases that afflict their families.

"I commend Mayor Gavin Newsom for successfully leading this effort."
