Pelosi Statement on New Job Loss Numbers
Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the new job loss numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
"The new job loss numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the economy lost another 189,000 jobs over the last two months. That means that since President Bush took office two years ago, a total of 1.7 million jobs have been lost -- the worst record on job creation for any president in the past 58 years.
"This morning, at the same time that the new job loss numbers were being announced, Vice President Cheney was out touting the Bush economic plan. And yet most economists agree that the Bush plan is not a stimulus plan at all and will not have any real immediate impact on the economy. Even the White House’s own Council of Economic Advisers estimates that the Bush plan would create only 190,000 jobs in 2003 -- less than one-fifth of the number of jobs created by the House Democratic economic stimulus plan. When is President Bush going to realize that job creation needs to be his top priority?
"Out-of-work Americans are hurting. Congress should act right away by enacting real, fast-acting job creating measures, such as the plan put forth by House Democrats that will create 1 million new jobs this year, put money in the hands of consumers, and provide relief to laid-off workers."
