Pelosi Statement on Secretary Rumsfeld’s Job Performance
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s job performance:
“The past two days have given the American people a clear idea of job performance standards in the Bush Administration. On Sunday, White House chief of staff Andrew Card described Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld as doing a ‘spectacular job.’ Today, President Bush said that Secretary Rumsfeld is doing ‘a really fine job.’
“This is the same Secretary Rumsfeld who failed to provide enough troops necessary to secure Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein, who failed to give our troops the body and vehicle armor that could save their lives, and who failed to prevent horrific prisoner abuse in Iraq and elsewhere. At every step, Secretary Rumsfeld has refused to accept any level of responsibility or even admit any mistakes.
“We now know that Mr. Rumsfeld callously delegated to a machine one of the saddest and most sacred duties of the Secretary of Defense -- signing condolence letters to parents whose sons or daughters have been killed in the line of duty. Those who have lost so much expect much more from a person whom the President has entrusted with life and death decisions involving our troops.”
