Pelosi: On 9/11 Bill, Republicans Finally Drop Their Delaying Tactics

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the deal apparently agreed to late today by the conferees on the 9/11 intelligence reform bill:

“At long last, it appears that Republicans have dropped their delaying tactics, and Congress will have the opportunity to make America safer.  This bill overhauls our intelligence agencies and better protects Americans against terrorism.

“This bill is a beginning, not the end, of our efforts to protect the American people by strengthening the systems by which we collect, process, and disseminate intelligence.  We owe at least this much to the American people, and particularly to the families of the victims of 9/11.

“Based on my understanding of what it is in the conference report, I will support it.  I am concerned, however, that the Director of National Intelligence it creates does not possess the same degree of power as that envisioned by the independent 9/11 Commission and included in the Senate bill.

“But we simply must move forward to establish a more authoritative management system for the intelligence community. The authorities provided to the new Director in this bill are greater than those currently available to the intelligence community's leadership, and they are substantially better than those contained in the legislation drafted by House Republicans.

“I hope that the Republican leadership will not tarnish this achievement by agreeing to vote in the next Congress on ill-advised changes to our immigration laws.”
