Pelosi Statement on FBI Expanding Halliburton InvestigationWashington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on news reports that the FBI is expanding its investigation into allegations that the Pentagon improperly awarded no-bid military contracts to Halliburton Co.: “For months, the American people have been shocked by accusations that Halliburton was the White House’s contractor of choice in Iraq, and as a result was making tremendous profits from the war. They have wondered why it seemed that no one was doing anything about it, and could only conclude that it was because Halliburton has friends in high places. “The law permits the award of sole source contracts to companies that have ‘unique attributes.’ The fact that Halliburton’s former CEO, Dick Cheney, is now vice president is certainly not the kind of unique attribute the law has in mind. “President Bush should insist that getting to the bottom of the Halliburton mess be a law enforcement priority of his Administration, and that those federal employees who come forward with information should not have to fear retaliation from within the Department of Defense or anywhere else. “The American people deserve to know the full story behind the awarding of these contracts.” |
“ Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans. ” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi |
