Pelosi: Intransigence of House Republicans Shelves 9/11 Intelligence Reform Bill
Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement this afternoon on the failure of the Republican Congress to pass a 9/11 intelligence reform bill before Election Day:
“More than three years ago, our country suffered the most devastating attacks in our history. Nearly 100 days ago, the independent commission established to investigate the 9/11 attacks made unanimous, bipartisan recommendations calling for urgent change. In response, House Republicans, who opposed the creation of the commission and opposed giving it the time it requested to complete its work, took the House on a 40-day summer recess.
“Today, because of the unwillingness of House Republicans to support the bipartisan approach implementing the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations – which were endorsed by the families of 9/11, and by House Democrats, Senate Democrats, and Senate Republicans – our country’s top national security challenge remains unfinished.
“The intransigence of House Republicans has produced a failure by Congress in its primary responsibility to protect the American people. And President Bush did not provide the necessary leadership to break the impasse. The inaction of the Republicans is inexcusable.
“Unfortunately, it continues a pattern for the Republicans, who for the past two years have controlled the entire government – the White House, the Senate, and the House – yet have ignored the urgent concerns of the American people, from national security, to the economy, to education, health care, and the environment.
“By their destructive choices against the interests of the American people, Republicans have proven themselves unfit to lead. America deserves better, and America will do better under Democratic leadership.”
