Pelosi Statement on Executive Orders on Intelligence Restructuring

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the announcement that President Bush will sign executive orders to increase the authority of the Central Intelligence Director until the position of a national intelligence director is created and to establish a new national counterterrorism center:

"Finally, President Bush is doing part of what the Joint Inquiry of the Congressional Intelligence Committees and the 9/11 Commission have long recommended.  But more must be done.

"The question remains whether President Bush and the Republicans in Congress will act quickly on the remaining recommendations of the Commission before Congress adjourns.

"We have a responsibility to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, to their families, and to all Americans to give the Commission's recommendations the prompt, careful consideration they deserve and to work together to implement them.  Unfortunately, the 9/11 Commission’s sense of urgency seems to be lost on the Congress.  Despite requests that Congress reconvene, the House and Senate remain on a six week recess that prevents legislative action on the Commission’s recommendations.

"Since the Speaker and President have failed to reconvene the House despite repeated requests, House Democrats met in Washington, D.C. earlier this month and continued to work.  We will introduce legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations as soon as the House reconvenes.  I have encouraged Speaker Hastert to co-sponsor that legislation.

"Commission leaders have challenged the President and the Congress to treat the unanimous, bipartisan report with the same sense of urgency that the Commission brought to its task.  Democrats will spare no effort in meeting that challenge."
