Pelosi Statement on the Schlesinger Commission Report on Abu Ghraib
Washington, D.C.-- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the Schlesinger Commission’s report on the Iraq Abu Ghraib prison scandal:
“Today’s report by the Schlesinger Commission and the portions of the report by Major General Fay reported in the media make it clear that responsibility for the abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison goes far beyond the small number of relatively low ranking military personnel previously blamed by the Bush Administration.
“The reports point out that the conditions that fostered the abusive conduct resulted from the combination of an insufficient response by the Bush Administration to reports of abuse at Abu Ghraib, and the failure by leaders in Iraq to adequately supervise activities at the prison.
“The notion that the horrible acts at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere were an aberration -- which has been used by House Republican leaders to justify their failure to conduct a meaningful investigation -- is destroyed by these reports.
“The damage to the international standing of the United States produced by the abuses at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere can not be undone until all of those responsible are held accountable. It is imperative that Congress independently investigate the prisoner abuses, and examine the Administration's policies and legal theories that may have led -- either directly or indirectly -- to the acts at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere.
“For months, Democrats have diligently attempted to have the House carry out its responsibilities, but time and again, Republicans have failed to conduct any credible investigations.”
