Pelosi: 'New Job Numbers Show that Economy Has Not Turned the Corner'

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on today’s Bureau of Labor Statistics announcement that only 32,000 jobs were created in July, far fewer than economists had predicted, and that May and June’s job growth numbers were both revised downward:

"Today's job numbers announcement is extremely disappointing and undercuts the Bush Administration’s claims about the economy turning the corner. The anemic job creation numbers – just a fraction of what economists had predicted – demonstrate that the Bush Administration must make real changes to its failed policies to erase the enormous jobs deficit and get the economy back on track.

"While 1.8 million private-sector jobs have been lost over the last three and a half years, and middle-class families are being squeezed by flat paychecks and rising energy prices and health insurance costs, the Administration continues to do nothing to help everyday Americans.

"Instead, the Republicans offer tax cuts for those who need them least and tax loopholes for big corporations to outsource American jobs. They are making the middle-class squeeze even worse by cutting overtime pay and proposing to increase the cost of college by preventing students from taking advantage of low-interest rates.

"Democrats have a better way. We have proposed an ‘American Jobs Plan’ to make businesses more competitive and create better-paying jobs here at home. Our plan is focused on the future; it invests in our people through job training and education, and it will create new, high-paying jobs by supporting research and development.

"Democrats are fighting to bring prosperity and opportunity to every corner of America, not just the President’s imaginary corner."
