Pelosi Statement on Creation of National Intelligence Director

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush’s announcement that he would adopt the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to create a national director of intelligence:

"More than 18 months ago, the Congressional Joint Inquiry into 9/11 terrorist attacks recognized the danger we continue to face and concluded that true responsibility and accountability for the operation of the intelligence community had to be consolidated in one position. The 9/11 Commission reached the same conclusion.

"The Joint Inquiry's recommendations and the responsibility we have to the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families, should have produced quicker action by the White House. Finally, with the sense of urgency conveyed by Commission's report, President Bush is doing what has long been recommended. Why has it taken three years?

"Congress must move forward quickly to act on the recommendations of the Commission before adjourning in October. That is why I have called House Democrats back to Washington on August 10th to discuss the Commission's work directly with Commission members. And I again urge Speaker Hastert to reconvene the House in August."
