Pelosi Calls for Prompt Action on 9/11 Commission Report

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today sent a letter to Speaker Dennis Hastert calling for a prompt and thorough review of the significant recommendations made yesterday by the 9/11 Commission. Pelosi asked Hastert to reconvene the House in August to review the Commission's recommendations.

"The House must take steps now to ensure that it is prepared to vote on legislation implementing recommendations of the 9/11 Commission before Congress adjourns in October," Pelosi wrote. "The sense of urgency conveyed by the Commission’s report, and the responsibility we have to the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families, compels us to act now."

The following is the full text of the letter:

July 23, 2004

The Honorable J. Dennis Hastert
Speaker
U.S. House of Representatives
H-232 U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Speaker:

The report of the 9/11 Commission contains significant recommendations for changing the way the executive branch and the Congress deal with matters related to terrorism. It is essential that these recommendations receive a thorough review in the House of Representatives. That review must begin promptly.

I urge you to use the authority under the adjournment resolution to reconvene the House in August so that we are in the best possible position to conduct the review of the Commission’s recommendations.

I have asked the ranking Democrats on all committees to review the Commission’s work, and to urge their chairmen to start hearings rapidly on the recommendations that fall within their jurisdiction. I urge that you will make a similar request of the chairmen. To engage the American people, and encourage their full participation, these hearings must be conducted in open session to the maximum extent possible.

The House must take steps now to ensure that it is prepared to vote on legislation implementing recommendations of the Commission before Congress adjourns in October.

The sense of urgency conveyed by the Commission’s report, and the responsibility we have to the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families, compels us to act now.

Thank you for your consideration of this most serious matter.

Sincerely,

/s/

Nancy Pelosi
Democratic Leader
