Pelosi: President Has 'Just Say No' Policy on Meeting our Country's Domestic Needs
Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on a news report in The Washington Post that President Bush may cut spending on domestic programs in every agency – including homeland security, veterans, and education – if he is reelected:
"The President's reckless economic policies are having serious consequences for the American people. Today's report is yet another example of how the President's irresponsible tax cuts for people making more than $1 million each year are squeezing out vital domestic priorities.
"One day after the Bush Administration warned Americans of possible impending terrorist attacks, news reports indicate that President Bush is prepared to cut the homeland security budget if he is reelected. The same week the President will honor veterans on Memorial Day and at the World War II Memorial, we learn that he is prepared to cut veterans spending. The Bush Administration is touting increased spending on homeland security, veterans, and education this year, but apparently plans to make huge cuts to those same areas next year. No matter how he tries to hide it in an election year, the reality is that the President has a 'Just Say No' policy on meeting our country's domestic needs.
"The President needs to level with the American people and explain that he wants to cut domestic initiatives including homeland security, veterans, and education to pay for tax cuts for those who need them least."
