Pelosi: 'On Peace Officers Memorial Day, We Honor Noble Service of Law Enforcement Officers'

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today commemorating Peace Officers Memorial Day:

"Tomorrow, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. In a ceremony on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, sponsored by the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police and the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, we will honor those 145 law enforcement officers who were killed during the last year.

"In 1962, President Kennedy designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day. As a nation, and with a united voice, we salute those who go above and beyond the call of duty to keep us safe.

"When San Francisco Police Officer Isaac Espinoza was killed in the line of duty last month, my home town of San Francisco was reminded of the sacrifice law enforcement officers make when they selflessly risk their lives to protect us.

"I would also like to highlight the service of one special group of law enforcement officers: the United States Capitol Police. At tomorrow’s ceremony and every day, the United States Capitol Police protect one of the most cherished symbols of our democracy. A 1998 attack on the Capitol that resulted in the deaths of two Capitol Police Officers tragically highlighted their critical role.

"More than 740,000 Americans serve in the federal, state, and local police forces. Thanks to their tireless public service, law enforcement officers have long been symbols of comfort and security in the communities they serve. Since September 11th, we have asked our law enforcement officers to play an additional role as 'first responders.' In every community across America, law enforcement officers are our first line of defense against another terrorist attack.

"On behalf of all of our law enforcement officers and first responders, my colleagues and I will continue fighting to provide the tools necessary to keep America safe. We owe these men and women -- and the Americans they protect -- nothing less.

"With great respect and much appreciation, we take this opportunity to remember the fallen, and honor the noble service of those who protect America’s communities."
