Pelosi: Bush Broke Promise to Protect Roadless National ForestsWashington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the third anniversary of the Bush Administration's promise to enforce the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which was issued in January 2001 to protect 58.5 million acres of the national forest system from commercial logging and road building: "Three years ago, Administration officials loudly proclaimed their support for the 'roadless rule' that would protect the wildest areas in our national forests. Yet once again, President Bush's rhetoric on protecting the environment is not matched by his anti-environment actions. "The President continues to speak glowingly about protecting the environment, but his Administration is opening up roadless areas to logging. The Administration is starting with the magnificent Tongass National Forest in Alaska, and roadless areas in national forests in 39 states are also at risk. This is unacceptable. "Americans get it, even though the Administration may not. Forests protect wildlife, preserve drinking water, and provide us with opportunities for recreation. Each year, nearly 150 million Americans participate in outdoor activities -- including hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing, and much more. "Americans strongly support preserving our forests as a legacy for future generations. Unfortunately, the Bush Administration is more concerned with its special interest allies in the timber industry than the public interest." |
“ Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans. ” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi |
