Pelosi Statement on Bush Tax Day Speech

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush's speech in Iowa this afternoon on taxes and the economy:

"President Bush's argument that his reckless tax cuts are turning the economy around is out of touch with the reality of 8.4 million Americans looking for work.

"Since President Bush took office, the economy has lost 2.6 million jobs, including 31,900 in Iowa. He has the worst record of job creation of any President since Herbert Hoover, with the longest stretch without net payroll growth since 1939. The news worsened today when the Labor Department reported that the number of people filing unemployment benefits jumped by 30,000 last week to 360,000 -- the highest level since 2002.

"On the day that millions of Americans file their tax returns, how does President Bush respond?  By advocating making permanent the tax cuts that have undermined the fiscal soundness of our country and have not created jobs. The President's reckless economic policies are responsible for the half trillion dollar deficit. We can not afford to mortgage our children's futures on more tax cuts for millionaires."
