House Democrats to Hold More Than 70 District Events With Local Seniors on Medicare and Rx Drugs

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and Democratic Caucus Chairman Bob Menendez today announced that House Democrats will hold more than 70 events around the country on Medicare and prescription drugs this weekend.

Between today and Tuesday, March 23, House Democrats plan to meet with seniors at town hall meetings, nursing homes, and at senior centers in their home districts to discuss the new Republican prescription drug plan, which is a bad deal for seniors and a bad deal for Medicare. Hoyer hosted an event this morning and Pelosi will hold one tomorrow afternoon in South Carolina with Congressman James E. Clyburn, Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus.

Many members are playing a video featuring trusted former news anchor Walter Cronkite, in which he discusses the new Republican law. The video was produced by Families USA, a non-profit, non-partisan organization focused on providing high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

Pelosi said: "These meetings and the video explain why the Republican bill is a cruel hoax on seniors – it does not provide a meaningful prescription drug benefit, it creates a $46 billion slush fund for Medicare HMOs, and it leaves seniors with higher out-of-pocket costs and a huge gap in coverage. Democrats are working to repeal this lemon of a law and provide guaranteed, affordable Medicare benefit that negotiates prices and lowers drug costs."

Hoyer said: "Most seniors have many questions about the new Republican prescription drug bill but once they learn about it they don't like it. Democrats are going to fan out around the country this weekend to educate seniors on this flawed bill and tell them how they can help change it."

Menendez said: "Across the country, Democrats are meeting with seniors to help explain the realities and shortcomings of the Republican prescription drug plan, which shortchanges seniors. And just like the Republicans continue to find new -- and ever increasing -- cost estimates for the plan itself, we continue to find that the bill will cost seniors more than they were told by Congressional Republicans."
