Pelosi Statement on Bush Administration Mercury Guidelines

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the revised guidelines for mercury levels in fish that were issued jointly today by the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency:

"No one should have to consume toxic mercury to get the health benefits of eating fish. Eating fish provides us with protein and essential nutrients, but mercury can cause permanent brain damage to children, particularly during pregnancy and infancy.

"The President and Republicans in Congress must act swiftly and decisively to reduce toxic mercury emissions into the environment, where it works its way up the food chain into our diets.

"The Bush Administration’s plan for reducing mercury emissions from power plants would take far too long. Instead of developing a plan that best protects children and the environment, the Administration adopted the goals and views of corporations that don’t want to pay for pollution controls on power plants. For the sake of our children, the Administration must go back to the drawing board."
