Pelosi: 'Greenspan Comments Dramatize Destructive Effects of Republicans' Reckless Economic Policies'

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's testimony before the House Budget Committee:

"Chairman Greenspan's comments today dramatize the destructive effects of Republicans' reckless economic policies: record budget deficits, higher interest rates, lower economic growth, and substantial risk to the Social Security benefits that retirees depend on.

"When President Bush took office, there was a $5.6 trillion surplus. Today, the deficit is projected at more than $3 trillion over the next 10 years -- a $9 trillion fiscal collapse. Yet the President is still insisting on $1 trillion in additional tax breaks for those who need them least, compounding the fiscal recklessness and increasing the damage to Americans' jobs and retirement security.

"Republicans should stop catering to the corporate interests that put them in power and start representing the priorities of the American people. Our prosperity and financial security are at stake."
