Pelosi Statement on New Unemployment Numbers

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on January employment data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

"Today’s announcement confirms what more than eight million unemployed Americans already know -- President Bush's economic policies are just not working.

"The 112,000 jobs added in January do not even keep pace with the number of people entering the workforce. And the hemorrhaging of manufacturing jobs continues with the loss of another 11,000 jobs.

"After losing nearly three million jobs and with more than eight million Americans out of work, the Bush Administration needs to change course. The President's budget released on Monday, however, shows no sign that the President is getting serious about job creation. The President continues to give tax breaks to the wealthy and tough breaks to workers, and we can expect the same dismal results.

"Democrats have proposed an economic growth and job creation package that will create 1 million new jobs in the next year. It is long past time for Republicans to abandon their disastrous course of action and join Democrats in supporting fiscally responsible policies that will turn the economy around."
