Pelosi: ‘New Mercury Regulations Will Protect Utility Companies, Not Children’

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the Bush Administration’s proposed new regulations on mercury emissions from power plants, which were published today:

"Science has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that mercury is extremely toxic, especially for children. The Administration’s plan for cleaning up mercury pollution from power plants, however, protects utility companies, not children.

"The Clean Air Act clearly spells out how toxic chemicals in the air should be reduced, but the Bush Administration is deliberately taking a different approach -- an approach that will take too long, do too little, and may not even be legal. The result will be more lawsuits and more delays, and polluters will be able to continue polluting for many years.

"Once again under the Bush Administration, special interests will benefit at the expense of the environment and children’s health."
