Pelosi: ‘Endangered Species Regulations Yet Another Attack on Environmental Laws’

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to the Bush Administration’s proposed regulations on the Endangered Species Act. The regulations would drop the requirement that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consult with the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service before approving pesticides that could harm endangered species:

"For too long, the Environmental Protection Agency has not met its legal obligation to ensure that new pesticides will not harm endangered species. Rather than requiring EPA to do its job, however, the Bush Administration wants to let the agency off the hook. The Administration's new regulations would allow the EPA to approve most new pesticides without consulting with the experts on endangered fish and wildlife.

"Under these loosened rules, life will be easier for the EPA but at the expense of many fish, birds, and other endangered species. These species are vital for our ecosystem, for our economy, and to Americans who enjoy outdoor recreation of all sorts.

"These proposed regulations on endangered species are yet another example of the Bush Administration's stealthy but steady attack on our nation's environmental laws."
