Pelosi Names Matsui to Head DCCC

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader-Elect Nancy Pelosi today named Congressman Robert Matsui of California to lead the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“It is with great pride that I appoint Bob Matsui to be Chair of the DCCC. He commands enormous respect for his legislative experience and political acumen,” Pelosi said. “As a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee, Bob is an expert on complex issues, including tax policy, international trade, Social Security, and health care. His legislative and political leadership make him extremely qualified to bring the Democrats to victory in 2004 by attracting grassroots and financial support across the nation.”

Pelosi also praised outgoing DCCC Chair Nita Lowey of New York. “Nita Lowey has been an outstanding and effective leader for the party, and I know that Bob Matsui will build upon her success,” Pelosi said.

“America is at a critical moment when it needs focused and disciplined leadership on economic issues,” Matsui said. “Nancy Pelosi has already demonstrated her vision and talents in that arena. Her enthusiasm is infectious. I will be honored to serve as Chair of the DCCC as we work together to define an economic and domestic platform with broad appeal and support.”

As Chair of the DCCC, Matsui will be the first Asian-American to serve in the highest levels of the House Democratic leadership.

A 24-year veteran of the House, Matsui is currently the Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee, where he has been leading the Democratic effort to oppose the privatization of Social Security and protect the program’s guaranteed benefits. Recently, he has crafted pension security and corporate accountability legislation.

Congressman Matsui is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and Hastings College of Law. After graduation, he opened a private law practice. He was elected to the Sacramento City Council in 1971, became vice mayor of the city in 1977, and was elected to Congress in 1978.
