Pelosi Statement on House Vote to Weaken Clean Air Act

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on a motion offered by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) to instruct Energy Bill conferees to drop a provision that would weaken the Clean Air Act and harm public health. The motion failed by a vote of 232 to 182.

"In a closed door deal, Republican Energy Bill negotiators inserted a provision that would let some cities with dirty air off the hook by weakening clean air standards. All Americans, regardless of where they live, deserve to breathe clean air.

"The Republicans are rolling back 30 years of bipartisan environmental progress, and it should be a cause of concern to anyone who breathes air, drinks water, or eats food."
