Pelosi Statement Condemning Anti-Semitic Comments of Malaysian Prime Minister

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi applauded a resolution passed unanimously by the House of Representatives tonight to condemn the anti-Semitic comments of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad. On October 17th, Prime Minister Mohamad addressed the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Prime Minister Mohamad's statement, which included comments that "Jews rule the world by proxy" and Jews "get others to fight and die for them," drew immediate criticism from world leaders.

"The Prime Minister's comments are unacceptable and damaging to the fragile process of peacemaking," Pelosi said. "As world leaders, we must focus on promoting real reform rather than making inflammatory statements. The Prime Minister’s comments only provide fodder for scapegoat theories. We must be ever vigilant to drown out the voices of hate."

In response to the comments, Members of Congress sent a letter to the Prime Minister condemning his anti-Semitic remarks and requesting a clarification or retraction. In the letter, the Members wrote, "blaming Israel and the Jewish people for the problems and difficulties experienced by other cultures is wrong and has led to senseless bloodshed and violence…These words are especially damaging at a crucial time when the Palestinian people and Israel struggle to reach a lasting peace. Actions that inflame tensions between the Islamic and Jewish worlds serve only to make that struggle more complicated."

The following Members signed the letter: Neil Abercrombie (D-HI), Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Joe Baca (D-CA), Brian Baird (D-WA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Howard Berman (D-CA), Max Burns (R-GA), Eric Cantor (R-VA), Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Brad Carson (D-OK), Ed Case (D-HI), John Conyers (D-MI), Phil Crane (R-IL), Joe Crowley (D-NY), Artur Davis (D-AL), Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), Susan Davis (D-CA), Peter Deutsch (D-FL), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Bob Filner (D-CA), Barney Frank (D-MA), Martin Frost (D-TX), Jane Harman (D-CA), Alcee Hastings (D-WA), Robin Hayes (R-NC), Joe Hoeffel (D-PA), Mike Honda (D-CA), Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Steve Israel (D-NY), Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), Steve King (R-IA), Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), Tom Lantos (D-CA), Rick Larsen (D-WA), James Leach (R-IA), Sander Levin (D-MI), John Lewis (D-GA), Nita Lowey (D-NY), Denise Majette (D-GA), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jim Matheson (D-UT), Robert Matsui (D-CA), Karen McCarthy (D-NY), Betty McCollum (D-MN), Jim McDermott (D-WA), Michael McNulty (D-NY), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Brad Miller (D-NC), Jeff Miller (R-FL), Dennis Moore (D-KS), Jim Moran (D-VA), Sue Myrick (R-NC), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Mike Pence (R-IN), Jon Porter (R-NV), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Steve Rothman (D-NJ), Bernard Sanders (D-VT), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Ed Schrock (R-VA), David Scott (D-GA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Hilda Solis (D-CA), Ted Strickland (D-OH), Jim Turner (D-TX), Mark Udall (D-CO), Tom Udall (D-NM), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Diane Watson (D-CA), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Anthony Weiner (D-NY), Robert Wexler (D-FL).
