Pelosi: President Bush Neglects the Economy, Environment and Education

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on President Bush’s trip to California:

“Today President Bush is in California to talk about the economy and the environment -- he has failed miserably at both.

“President Bush would like to paint a rosy picture of the economy, but the fact is that his misguided economic policies have failed to grow the economy and create jobs. Since President Bush took office, he has added three trillion to the national debt and the country has lost 3.2 million jobs. In California alone, 1.2 million people are unemployed and looking for work.

“At the same time that President Bush has turned record surpluses into record deficits, and given away billions of dollars in tax breaks to those who need it least, he has not provided working families with the same child tax credit he has already given other families. 1.7 million children from California are getting the message loud and clear - President Bush isn’t willing to fight for them.

“Critical to our economy is excellence of education for our children. President Bush and the Republicans in Congress have under funded the very education programs they pretend to support, meaning that millions of children will not receive quality pre-school education, after school programs or help with the basics of reading and math.

“On the environment, instead of protecting our precious natural resources for future generations President Bush is intent on rolling back more than 30 years of bipartisan progress. Whether trying to gut clean air and clean water laws or drastically under funding our national parks, President Bush sides with special interests rather than public interests. America’s children deserve better. The President should drop his plan to privatize National Park Service jobs and push to protect our cherished natural and historical resources for all Americans.

“It is time for President Bush and the Republicans to get to work for all Americans.

“Democrats have fought these Republican proposals because we know they will make it harder for working families to succeed. Democrats are fighting for opportunity, for jobs, for education, for clean air and clean water, for homeland security, health care, and pension security for working families."
