Pelosi: President Bush Needs to Work with the United Nations in IraqWashington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to news reports that President Bush was abandoning efforts to include the United Nations in peace keeping in Iraq: “The United States needs help in Iraq. The Bush Administration should be focused on addressing the concerns that are preventing members of the United Nations from providing meaningful and timely financial assistance, personnel and material. “The Bush Administration seems determined to have the United States bear most of the burdens of the Iraq occupation for the indefinite future. This policy leaves us ill prepared to deal with other events in the world, and leaves our forces in Iraq unnecessarily exposed to high risks. “As my colleagues and I said in a July 25th letter to the President, 'If we fail to secure the peace in Iraq, the consequences for our security are ominous. America will be less safe. Our authority will be diminished in the eyes of our allies and our enemies alike. Dramatic changes are required to deal with the realities on the ground and to organize for the long haul, and time is short.'” |
“ Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans. ” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi |
