Pelosi: In First Seven Months of this Congress, House Republicans Time and Time Again Chose Special Interests Over the P

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the House of Representatives began the August District Work Period:

"Today, the Republican-led House of Representatives recessed for August without extending the child tax credit to working and military families in our country. We are returning to our districts, but for the families of those 12 million children, we are returning empty-handed.

"Night after night for the past two weeks, Democrats came to the floor of the House to make the case for the children of America’s working families and the children of parents in the military. And night after night, House Republicans have told these children in no uncertain terms that they were not good enough for an expanded child tax credit.

"On 15 separate votes, Republicans have defended the indefensible. It is simply unconscionable.

"But it is part of a pattern. In the first seven months of this Congress, President Bush and House Republicans have time and time again chosen the special interests over the public interest. At the same time that the Republicans have turned record surpluses into record deficits and given away billions of dollars in tax breaks for the elite few, they have refused to provide working families with the same child tax credit they have already given every other family.

"Republicans have under funded the very education programs they pretend to support, including voting to dismantle the Head Start program that has been an avenue of opportunity for so many. Republicans have rammed through legislation that will not make prescription drugs affordable for seniors and the disabled -- in fact it will leave seniors at the mercy of HMOs and big insurance companies and raise premiums by as much as 25 percent.

"Republicans have proposed limiting overtime pay for millions of hardworking Americans, as well as changing our pension laws to cut the private pensions of many older workers in half. They have shortchanged veterans’ health care and refused to repeal the ‘disabled veterans tax’ that reduces the retirement benefits of many older disabled veterans.

"Democrats have fought these Republican proposals because we know they will make it harder for working families to succeed. Democrats are fighting for opportunity, for jobs, for homeland security, education, health care, and pension security for working families."
