Pelosi Statement on Space Shuttle Tragedy

Farmington, Penn. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today following the tragic news of the explosion of the space shuttle Columbia.

“On behalf of my Democratic colleagues, I have expressed our heartfelt condolences to Sean O’Keefe, the Administrator of NASA. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the seven astronauts who were lost today on the space shuttle Columbia. Our nation and the world are devastated by this tragedy.

“These courageous astronauts were pioneers in a grand tradition of space exploration whose mission -- to improve our lives through unprecedented scientific breakthroughs, life-saving medical research, and building international cooperation -- is only accomplished through the heroic commitment of such brave men and women.

“Our prayers are with President Bush at this time of sorrow for our country. We extend our deepest sympathy to Prime Minister Sharon for the loss of the first Israeli astronaut in space.

“I hope it is a comfort to the families who have lost their loved ones that the whole world mourns their loss and is praying for them at this sad time.”
