Pelosi: Increased Funding for the Arts is a Victory of Imagination over Ideology

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement following the vote this afternoon to support an amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill, sponsored by Representatives Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Norman Dicks (D-WA), that would increase the budget of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by $15 million. The amendment was approved by a vote of 225 to 200.

"Today's vote in the House to increase funding for the NEA and NEH is a victory of imagination over ideology.

"Arts and humanities education enrich children culturally and academically. When children participate in arts education, their critical skills increase. They score higher on reading, writing, math, language development, and spatial reasoning.

"Exposure to the arts through the NEA helps children build confidence in their class work, honors their creativity, and unleashes the power of their imagination.

"Grants from the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities leverage millions of dollars each year in private support for arts projects. In many communities, they are the sole source of arts funding.

"Sadly, this amendment is not an expansion of the NEA, but an attempt to restore some of the 1995 budget cuts. There is bipartisan consensus now that those cuts were too deep. We must continue to boost funding for the NEA and NEH."
