Pelosi: Popular Conservation Funding is Latest Victim of Republican Tax Cuts

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after the House voted on a party line vote of 219 to 199 this evening to oppose a Democratic amendment sponsored by Representatives David Obey (D-WI) and Norman Dicks (D-WA) that would have restored $569 million for conservation programs in the Interior Appropriations bill. The amendment was paid for with a slight reduction in the tax cut for individuals making more than $1 million per year -- rather than receiving a tax cut of $88,000 in 2004, they would receive $85,000.

“When the Conservation and Reinvestment Act passed three years ago, a broad coalition of environmental, hunting and fishing, recreation, and historic preservation groups joined Democrats and Republicans in support of increased conservation funding. Today, just three years later, the House Republican leadership tossed that conservation funding overboard.

“Yet again, a vital American priority is falling victim to the Republicans' devotion to tax cuts for those who need it least. The Democratic amendment would have kept the promise we made to Americans by restoring the deep Republican cuts.

“Rather than standing up for our natural and historical treasures, our lands and wildlife, and recreational opportunities for Americans of all ages and income levels, the Republicans voted to keep tax cuts for the wealthy at all costs. While not surprising, it is a great disservice to the American people."
