Republicans Blocked Lobbying Reform Preventing Congress From Using Positions for Personal Profit

Washington, D.C.– House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon on today’s front-page USA Todaystory demonstrating the strong need for lobbying reform:

“Members of Congress should be committed to putting the people’s interests ahead of their own.  Instead, Republicans have blocked lobbying reform bills thatwould stop lawmakers from using their elected offices for personal profit, including a bill that would have expressly forbidden the conduct outlined in the USA Today story.  Republicans in Congress have a clear record of putting themselves first – ahead of American taxpayers and their priorities.

“Democrats are committed to restoring accountability, honesty and openness in government, and we have put it in writing with our Honest Leader and Open Government Act.  It is time for a New Direction.”
