Pelosi: Continuing Increase in Unemployment Rate Proves GOP Must Abandon its Disastrous Economic Course

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning following the announcement by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the nation’s unemployment rate had increased to 6.4 percent, its highest rate since April 1994:

"An unemployment rate of 6.4 percent is terrible news for the American people, and it is simply unacceptable. Too many hardworking Americans are looking for work, and President Bush and the Republican Congress continue to look the other way.

"Instead of a serious economic recovery plan, the Republicans insist on giving tax breaks to the wealthy and tough breaks to American workers. Their so-called plan is reckless, irresponsible and unfair.

"And, as we have seen month after month, it has not created jobs. In the last three months alone, the number of unemployed Americans has increased by 913,000. That brings the total unemployed to 9.4 million. Since President Bush took office, more than 3.1 million private-sector jobs have been lost, the worst record of job creation of any President since Herbert Hoover.

"We need policies that create jobs. Democrats have proposed an economic growth and job creation package that will create 1 million new jobs in the next year. It is long past time for Republicans to abandon their disastrous course of action and join Democrats in supporting fiscally responsible policies that will turn the economy around."
