Pelosi: We Must Move Past Rhetoric and Take Action to Help Our Men and Women in Uniform

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today honoring our men and women in uniform:

“This year, as we celebrate the Fourth of July, the American people have been inspired by the courage, professionalism and patriotism of our men and women in uniform in Iraq.

“Congress has rightfully honored our service men and women with several resolutions praising their service. Unfortunately, the actions of the Republican majority do not match their words. It is time to move past rhetoric and to take action that will help the men and women who are serving today and those who served yesterday.

“While the Republican majority continues to leave out 250,000 children of military families from the expansion of the child tax credit, Democrats are fighting for those who fight for us. We will not rest until the child tax credit is extended to all children of working and military families.

“While Republican leaders refuse to end the disabled veterans tax -- even though a majority of both parties favor legislation to do just that -- Democrats are fighting for those who fought for us by signing a discharge petition to force the Republican Leadership to bring the bill up for a vote. As of last week, 199 Democrats had signed the petition but just one Republican.

“Our veterans’ agenda will help those who served yesterday, those serving today and those who will serve tomorrow. For our veterans, those who served yesterday, we included the end of the disabled veterans tax. For our forces and their families serving today, we proposed increased educational opportunities for Reservists and National Guardsmen. And for those considering enlisting tomorrow, Democrats have sent a powerful message that America will always care for those who serve.

“The Democratic Veterans’ Package ensures that America fulfills its moral obligation to those who have paid the high price for our freedom. To the men and women in uniform today and to those who have served in the past, we say, ‘Thank you for your service.’”
