Pelosi: Census Report Shows Bush Economics Has Failed the Middle Class and Working Families

Washington, D.C.House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to today’s Census Bureau report:

“This new Census report provides ample evidence that President Bush’s economic policies of enormous tax cuts for the wealthy and massive budget deficits have failed the American people.  The so-called economic recovery has been so anemic that it is unprecedented.  Yet just last week, the President said: ‘Things are good for American workers.’  This report clearly shows otherwise.

“Since President Bush took office, 5.4 million more Americans are living in poverty, 6.8 million more are without health insurance, and overall median household income has declined by $1,300.  Every segment of American society have seen their income decline under the Bush Administration, with the middle class and working families losing the most ground.  And paychecks for full-time workers were down again in 2005.

“Our economy is moving in the wrong direction, and President Bush and the Republicans in Congress are woefully out of touch with this fact.  Democrats support a new direction for American workers by raising the minimum wage, but Republicans want to slash taxes for the wealthiest few.  And Democrats support pay-as-you-go budgeting, but Republicans continue to burden our future generations with mountains of debt.”
