Pelosi: ‘Reauthorization of Voting Rights Act Is a Victory for American Democracy’

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon on the passage of H.R. 9, the Voting Rights Reauthorization Act. The bill passed with the full support of House Democrats, 390 to 33.

"House Democrats pledged that we would not rest until the expiring sections of the Voting Rights Act are strengthened and reauthorized.  We also pledged to fight back the damaging amendments that threatened to severely weaken and diminish this vital legislation.

"Thankfully, in the People’s House, our nation’s commitment to equality and justice for all triumphed.

"Today a clear majority of the House voted to reauthorize and strengthen the Voting Rights Act for another 25 years.  This is a victory for American democracy.   We must always reaffirm that our democracy depends on protecting the right of every American citizen to vote in every election.

"I now urge the Senate to take up this legislation without delay."
