Pelosi: ‘Democrats Have Made Raising Minimum Wage Too Hot to Handle for Republicans’
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon after House Democrats won a floor vote on the minimum wage. Congressman George Miller of California proposed a non-binding Motion to Instruct that urged House-Senate conferees to create high-skilled and high-wage jobs – defined in the motion as paying not less than $7.25 per hour as defined in HR 2429, the Fair Minimum Wage Act. The motion to instruct was adopted, 260 to 159, with 64 Republicans indicating that they support a wage floor of $7.25 an hour.
"Democrats have made raising the minimum wage too hot to handle for Republicans. That’s why after voting against increasing it five times in the last month, today 64 Republicans joined Democrats in the first step to give more than nearly 7 million Americans a raise.
"With this vote, Republicans have gone on record as supporting raising the minimum wage. Democrats will continue to hold Republicans’ feet to the fire when this bill returns to the House floor to make certain that when the vote is binding, these same Republicans do not abandon their support for raising the minimum wage.
"Democrats have said emphatically that we will not support giving Congress a raise until Congress gives the American people one. The American people have said that the current minimum wage is immoral. We must raise the minimum wage now."
