Pelosi Statement on Senate Agreement to Take Up Stem Cell Legislation

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to an agreement in the Senate to take up legislation in July that would expand the number of embryonic stem cell lines eligible for federal research funding:

“For more than a year, the House-passed stem cell research legislation has languished in the Senate, holding up crucial research that has the potential to answer the prayers of America’s families.   I am pleased that the Republican leadership in the Senate has finally agreed to take up the legislation, which gives hope to the overwhelming number of Americans who support stem cell research.

“I sincerely hope the three-bill strategy that has been agreed to by the Senate is not an election-year ploy to allow the President to veto one bill and claim a false victory.  We must have a vote as soon as possible to expand stem cell research so we can unleash the miraculous power that science has to cure.”
