Pelosi: ‘We Must Pass Comprehensive Legislation That Will Protect Our Veterans and Their Private Information’

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to news reports that police have recovered a laptop that was stolen from a Department of Veterans Affairs employee and contained the sensitive personal data of 26.5 million veterans:

“I salute law enforcement officials for their work in the recovery of the stolen laptop that held the private information of 26.5 million veterans.  However, this news does not excuse the Bush Administration's abject failure of leadership in this situation.

“From failing to adequately secure our veterans' privacy, to failing to report the breach to the FBI, to further reports of veterans' data being stolen, our veterans have been left in harm’s way.  Republicans must join Democrats to pass comprehensive legislation that will protect our veterans and their private information, now and in the future.”
