Pelosi: ‘We Must Act Immediately to Pass the Voting Rights Act Reauthorization’

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the People for the American Way delivered to Speaker Hastert and Majority Leader Boehner a petition with 35,000 signatures calling for the immediate reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act:

“I am grateful to every American who signed the citizen petition asking Congress to renew the Voting Rights Act.  Democrats agree with the American people: we must act immediately to pass the Voting Rights Act reauthorization.

“I was proud to join Democratic and Republican leaders from both chambers of Congress to march down the Capitol steps last month and reaffirm our commitment to this legislation.  The VRA demands that we unite together as Americans with one voice to reaffirm our commitment to justice and equality for all.  Instead, some House Republicans are undermining the moral and historic commitment that binds us together, and have forced their leadership to withdraw the bill.  In exchange for harmony within their ranks, Republican leaders are willing to let the obstructive elements of their party undermine our national unity on the fundamental subject of voting rights.

“Democrats had the commitment of Republican leadership that they would bring bipartisan, bicameral legislation to the floor.  Democrats are holding Republicans to that commitment.”
