Pelosi: Report Highlights Administration's Neglect of National ParksWashington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today regarding the National Parks Conservation Association’s “Mid-term Report Card” on the Bush Administration’s treatment of our national parks: “Summer is here, and many Americans are planning to vacation in our national parks. Unfortunately, spectacular vistas and natural wonders are not the only things Americans will see. Americans will also see signs of trouble and neglect -- padlocked restrooms and visitor centers, crumbling buildings and trails, and polluted air that obscures the view. “Our national park system is in trouble, and it shows. Because of inadequate maintenance, park buildings and other structures are crumbling. Lack of protection has endangered more precious animal and plant species. And as the budget for national parks is cut, our dedicated national park personnel are stretched thin. “The grade of D-minus from the National Parks Conservation Association demonstrates the canyon-wide gap between President Bush's lofty rhetoric and his negligence in taking care of our national parks. As a Presidential candidate, George W. Bush promised to cherish our national parks and eliminate the maintenance backlog. This report demonstrates President Bush’s failure on nearly all counts. “The President should drop his plan to privatize National Park Service jobs and push for an increase in funds of at least $178 million for our national parks. Our cherished natural and historical resources need it. The American people, and in particular American children, who want to enjoy these wonders in the years to come deserve it.” |
“ Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans. ” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi |
