Pelosi Statement on Boehner’s Pledge to Oppose Minimum Wage Increase

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement on Republican Leader John Boehner's pledge to oppose Democratic efforts to increase the minimum wage this year:

"For nearly nine years, the Republican Congress has denied American workers an increase in the federal minimum wage, freezing it at $5.15 per hour. The price of gas has skyrocketed, the cost of health care is astronomically high, and America’s working families are feeling the pinch. Rather than stand with working families, Republicans stand with their Big Oil and pharmaceutical cronies. That’s immoral.

"Republicans have the opportunity to do the right thing by joining Democrats with a minimum wage increase for America’s working families. If Republicans continue to block increasing the minimum wage -- which a strong majority of Americans support -- Democrats' New Direction for America means that on the first week we control Congress, we will pass a minimum wage increase."
