Pelosi: 'Bush Administration Rule Changes to Increase Cost of Higher Education'

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement about today's front-page story in The New York Times that reports that, due to a change by the Bush Administration in the formula governing financial aid, families will likely need to pay more for college tuition:

"The Times story today is cause for concern. Using outdated economic information -- data from during the Clinton Administration when the economy was booming -- the Bush Administration has made a change in the bureaucratic rules that will likely require students to pay more to receive a college education.

"With college tuition prices skyrocketing and the economy grounded, the Bush Administration is in effect increasing the cost of higher education for average families. That is neither fair to students nor wise for our country.

"The Department of Education should report to Congress what these bureaucratic changes will mean to families trying to send their children to college, and the Congress must ensure that this antiquated portion of the Higher Education Reauthorization Act is corrected.

"Education is the key to success. We should be opening the doors of opportunity, not closing them."
