Pelosi Statement on Jewish American Heritage Month

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month:

"I am pleased that President Bush has recently signed a proclamation declaring May as Jewish American Heritage Month.  I hope this will be the first step toward making Jewish American Heritage Month a permanent part of the calendar.  The President's proclamation was the culmination of the tireless efforts of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who introduced the concurrent resolution urging the President to annually issue a proclamation calling on state and local governments and the American people to celebrate the contributions of our Jewish community to our nation.

"Members of the American Jewish Community have played a vital role in all aspects of our American history.  Contributions to our culture, politics, and social fabric are well documented, but not necessarily well known by all Americans.  It is my hope that schools, libraries, museums, educational institutions, and civic organizations will use this time to honor the essential imprint Jewish Americans have left upon our society."
