Pelosi: Cinco de Mayo Celebrates the Rich Cultural Heritage of Mexican Americans

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of Cinco de Mayo, which is celebrated tomorrow, May 5:

Cinco de Mayo

Mexican Ambassador Carlos de Icaza and
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

“Cinco de Mayo has come to represent a celebration of the rich cultural heritage Mexican Americans, and all Hispanics, bring to this country.  Hispanic values – faith, family, and love of country – are American values.  The Hispanic dream – the hope of a better future – is the American Dream.

“The Latino community wants what all Americans want: honest leadership, real security, energy independence, economic prosperity, educational excellence, and a health care system that works for everyone.

“As we have seen in the recent peaceful immigration movements, Hispanics are clearly vested in our country and want to continue to contribute to the strength of our nation.  Today, there are 30 Hispanic Members in the United States Congress, including 22 Democrats.  Many of them are Mexican-Americans, representing constituencies from all around the country.

“All Americans, whether they have been here for generations or just arrived on our shores, deserve the opportunity to realize the American dream.  This Cinco de Mayo, we honor the civic participation of Hispanic Americans and the community’s historical contributions to our nation.  We renew our commitment to the Latino community and to extending the circle of opportunity for all Americans.”
