Pelosi Statement on Skyrocketing Gas Prices

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today regarding a report by the Energy Department that gas prices have increased since last summer and are unlikely to go down:

“Almost half of Americans say gas prices are causing their families ‘serious hardship,’ yet the President has failed to take any action to lower gas prices.  Since President Bush took office in 2001, gas prices have increased by 82 percent, but he continues his reverse Robin Hood policies of massive giveaways for big oil and gas companies at the expense of consumers.

“Democrats have a better plan that works for everyone, not just the few.  Our plan would empower the FTC to crack down on price gouging to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices, increase production of alternative fuels, and rescind the billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, tax breaks, and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies.

“Under the Bush Administration, gas prices have gone drastically in the wrong direction – at the same time as incomes have fallen and health care costs have become an increasingly overwhelming burden to middle-class families.  Democrats’ plan will take our country in a new direction.”
