Pelosi: 'FCC Decision Jeopardizes Goals of Diversity, Competition, and Local Control'

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today regarding the Federal Communication Commission’s 3-2 party-line vote to change the rules governing media ownership. Last month, Pelosi joined more than 100 of her colleagues in asking FCC Chairman Michael Powell to delay this decision.

“I am extremely disappointed by today's decision by the FCC to relax the rules governing media ownership, which will pave the way for giant media companies to control an even larger share of our public airwaves.

“The Republican majority of the FCC has recklessly loosened the rules that Congress put in place to protect consumers and serve the public interest. These rules changes go too far and jeopardize the bipartisan goals of diversity, competition, and local control.

“We need to promote a much broader range of media ownership as well as programming. This decision will lead to fewer voices and less local control. It is not in the public interest.”
